Hello all,
maybe it's interesting for you to know more about the people and their intention here on the forum. I will start introducing myself. Please add your thought to this thread (if you want and feel ok with that).
As you see my name is Fred. I'm a car maniac and I like to have all my music and more with me on the road. Because I dislike to connect my phone every time I start a journey I looked for a solution to make this easier. What is easier than having an independent Android Auto PC with integrated SIM card which starts up when switching on the ignition? I don't know, but I want to know what CarBotics can do for me. So I joined Indiegogo and backed the 4G version. Now I'm waiting to get the hardware to start using it.
Oh, by the way, I'm located in Central Europe, Germany and I'm an old chap enjoying his" life 🤣. Part of that is influencing people and projects I like and "investing" my spare time moderating this forum. Hope you like my style of thinking.
Bye for now Fred
We love your style Fred! Great job so far!
You've received your unit, what are your thoughts?
Yes. Meanwhile my CarBotics unit arrived and I started "testing" it. Here is just my first impression (more to come under the different topic): It works "out of the box". I managed to connect my OBD2 dongle, Torque (a program to read temperatures, speed and so on) works. And I managed to watch videos in the car 😎 . Customizing to my wishes and needs will take some time (that's me, not a CarBotics problem). I'll report my findings.
Bye for now Fred
Hi Spacebison,
welcome to this forum. Waiting isn't my strong side, I tend to the opposite: Just do it 🙂. And with the words of my aunt (God bless her) "The last shirt has no pockets" I shelled out the money and started to wait. Positive surprise, my CarBotics arrived two days shy of 1 month later, this is the fastest delivery I ever got on Indiegogo.
To the unit: Worked out of the box (connection to the car is via CarPlay), system works stable, it's an "open Android" (bootloader is already open) and close to all programs work out if the box. The big difference to "the other development team" is that CarBotics team seems be more knowledgeable and open minded to use the synergie effects of having old chaps like you and me and their experience on their side. I don't regret to buy this product.
Lots of words, I'm just a content customer and my feeling tells me that I'm no longer alone 😉.
Greetings from Germany and bye for now Fred
Todd, me an iPhone? Never ever 😊. It's not worth the money and I only sometimes use one if I'm pressed and payed for 😏 .
I'll try to explain Carbotics operation a bit more in detail:
Carbotics connects to your cars head unit using Apple CarPlay as "transfer protocol" using USB (wired connection). That means your head unit has to understand CarPlay to "talk" with Carbotics.
Carbotics itself runs full Android 9, so it behaves like any other Android phone. You can use and install (most) programs from Android PlayStore.
To use a telephone (4G Version) you can either use the integrated hardware (just insert your SIM card) or you can use any other phone which complies to the Bluetooth commands for telephoning (your Google 6 pro should be fine).
In other words Carbotics is like an extension module to any compatible head unit, internal communication runs through CarPlay (in computer terms CarPlay is used as internal bus system). Carbotics is the new boss in your entertainment.
Bye for now Fred
